Update on DOVE Specific Churches:
- DOVE's Pastor Joseph Waithanji is still reeling from effects of the crisis. When trouble began, he moved his wife and children to the Catholic Church compound, where some other people from his tribe had run for safety. He stayed with the young men who were protecting their properties and sleeping out in the streets as the battles and arson raged in their neighborhood. Their house, church and school are all safe, and his family has now moved back. Many church members were forced to leave their homes. The good news is that when DOVE reached out with some assistance to all who were in the small camp for displaced persons, attendance at their church services has doubled. People have been touched by the practical love and genuine concern that they found in the body of Christ.
- In DOVE’s Western Kenya region (Kitale) many pastors and members stayed away from their homes for several days, only to go back and find that the doors were broken and everything stolen. "They burn the clothes, burn the bedding, and steal all the food," they explained. Because of the recent harvest, many families had a considerable amount of maize and beans in their homes, which was all stolen. "If they find someone in the house, they just slaughter them like an animal."
- The most affected churches are Muroki, Nyortis, Mulatiwa, Serena, Sango, and Kapretwa. Most all church members from DOVE Kabuyefwe and DOVE Mucharage have taken in displaced people from the other churches. Others are camping in the churches.
- In Kibera, DOVE Desert Streams is right next to the recently destroyed railway line. Pastor Tobias Oloo reports that "Many of our members testified of God's protection during the recent shootings." Gutted frames of buildings that used to be business premises or churches testify of anger and destructive outlet of people denied their right to have peaceful demonstrations.
- Except for sounds of gunshots at night and people banging the gate, in and around Kibera, church members, Joyspring School and DOVE Kianda have been protected. Together with Pastor Charles and Rose Wanyama, they have experienced God’s protection even though there were many days and nights when fighting raged around them. They report that their metal gate was being used for the “sharpening of blades” of those who were armed with knives and machetes.
